Cape St. Francis at a Glance

Portuguese presence. First recorded European visitor was Diogo Pereira Botelho in 1537. 

Dutch Presence. Ensign August Friedrich Beutler and a small group found "a small island" on 05 May 1752.

British presence. 1795 - 1803 marked initial period of British military rule. 

The fire didn't reach Cape St. Francis, but caused great harm to the Humansdorp district, destroying 20 farmhouses and killing at least 25 people. 

Work began in November of 1875, ending 04 July 1878. Estimated cost: $USD 25,000 (500,000 ZAR). 

Cape St. Francis was officially proclaimed a town in 1965.

The Blue Flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to "beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators who meet (and maintain) a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria."
